Pedro Mantorras was brought up in Sambizanga, a shanty town on the edge of the Angolan capital, Luanda. Like half the city's 4m population, Mantorras's family were refugees, displaced by Angola's 27-year civil war. His father was killed when he was three and his mother died when he was 16, making him responsible for younger siblings.
